Transportation

Student safety is our highest priority. As colder weather approaches, we want to remind families and students of an important transportation safety guideline: blankets are not permitted on school buses.

While we understand the desire to stay warm during morning and afternoon routes, blankets can create several safety concerns, including:

-Tripping or entanglement hazards when entering, exiting, or moving on the bus
-Increased risk during emergency evacuations, when every second counts
-Difficulty for drivers to clearly see students and ensure safe behavior

To help keep all riders safe, we ask that students dress warmly in coats, hats, and gloves instead of bringing blankets.

Our drivers and staff are committed to maintaining a safe environment on every route, and we appreciate your partnership in following transportation safety guidelines. If you have questions about this expectation, please contact the Transportation Department.

Thank you for helping us keep our buses safe for all students.

Sincerely,
London City Schools Transportation Department

Improved attendance brings broad benefits, including stronger engagement in learning, better mental health, and positive effects on families and the community. Because both excused and unexcused absences add up, it is important for schools, families, students, and community partners to work together to address the full range of barriers that keep students out of school. When we take a shared approach to improving attendance, we can keep our kids in the game and on track for future success.

Safety

Always stop for school buses when they are picking up or dropping off students. When a bus has its stop arm extended and lights flashing, children may be crossing the road, and drivers need to be fully alert and prepared to stop. Passing a stopped school bus is not only illegal, but it also puts children’s lives at risk in an instant, especially because students can be small, hard to see, and may move quickly or unexpectedly.

Nurse news

As we move into the colder months, we want to remind families of a few important health and wellness tips to help keep students comfortable and prepared throughout the school day. With temperatures dropping, please be sure your child comes to school dressed for the weather. Warm jackets, hats, and gloves are essential for both morning bus stops and outdoor recess. Students go outside as long as conditions are safe, and having appropriate cold-weather clothing helps them stay warm, healthy, and able to enjoy their time outdoors.

We also encourage families to send a complete change of clothing in their child’s backpack. Even older students experience unexpected spills, messy lunches, and occasional wipeouts at recess. Having an extra outfit available at school allows students to return to learning quickly without requiring parents to interrupt their day to bring in clothing.

There are many illnesses circulating right now, and we appreciate families continuing to monitor their child’s health. If you have any questions about whether your student should attend school or need guidance on symptoms, please reach out to the building nurse. Thank you for your help in keeping our school community healthy, warm, and ready to learn this winter season.

Sports Recap

Created by: Brylee Huff and Jacey Peters

London teams were busy all week, competing across the conference and beyond with strong individual performances and standout team efforts. Here’s a breakdown of the action:

🏀 Boys Basketball
The Red Raiders faced a tough road stretch this week. On January 6 at Indian Lake, London fell 76–64 despite a strong offensive night from Luke Johnson, who poured in 23 points, and JJ Calloway, who added 19. Three days later at Kenton Ridge, London battled hard but came up short again, 74–62. Colin Nickell led the scoring with 18 points, while Calloway chipped in 14.

🎳 Bowling
London Bowling competed in three close matches this week. On January 7 at Bethel, the Raiders narrowly lost 2271–2244. Two days later at home against North Union, London dropped another tight contest, 2241–2220. Despite the close scores, the team continues to show consistency and competitiveness on the lanes.

🏊‍♂️ Swimming
London swimmers competed at the Trotwood Madison Invitational on January 7, finishing 10th overall. Griffin Lotton had a huge meet, winning the 200 IM and placing 5th in the 100 breaststroke. James Thompson (6th, 100 freestyle), Gabe Scholl (6th, 200 IM), and Caelan Mars (7th, 200 freestyle) all delivered solid performances. On the girls' side, Grace Lotton led the way with a top-15 finish in the 100 backstroke.

🏀 Girls Basketball
The Lady Raiders had a dominant week at home. On January 7, London overwhelmed Shawnee 55–16 behind balanced scoring. Makaylah Jackson led with 14 points, while Addison Lambert filled the stat sheet with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals. On January 10, London followed up with another lopsided win, defeating Alder 67–12. Madilyn Adkins scored 12 points, while Lambert and Jackson each added 10 in another impressive team performance.

🤼‍♀️ Girls Wrestling
London wrestling had an outstanding showing on January 11 at the Fredericktown Invitational, placing 3rd overall out of 17 schools with 148.5 team points. Shayla Lowe captured a 1st-place finish, while Ella Ballah and Karlee Pratt each placed 2nd. Additional placers included Josie Ruble (3rd) and Hannah Howard, Brylee Huff, Khloe Jackson, and Charley Peters, all finishing 5th to round out a strong team effort.

Another busy and competitive week for London Athletics—great effort across all programs!

Enhancements to Safer Ohio School tip line include new options for reporting school safety concerns

In addition to calling and texting the state's free Safer Ohio School Tip Line (1-844-SAFEROH), recent changes now enable Ohioans to report school safety information using a new smartphone app and online web form to quickly report concerns. The tip line is staffed by crisis response professionals who are trained to help individuals contemplating self-harm.
