Principal Message

Dear High School Student Families,

We hope that you enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity to enjoy the total solar eclipse with your family. We hope you look stylish together with your eclipse glasses and can take advantage of the eclipse materials provided in this weekly update.

This week is the first of two weeks of state testing. This week is the English 2 assessment. Students who are participating in the test should have received an email from the school. All English 2 students will be participating and anyone that needs a qualifying score for graduation. Participation in this test is critical and can impact graduation. Students' testing will be at school at our normal start time. Students who are not testing will be following the two-hour delay schedule.

We will use the following schedule for April 16, 17 and 18.
Testing 7:20-10:30
1st Period 10:35-10:57
4th Period 11:00- 11:30
5th Period 11:33-12:03
6th Period 12:06-12:36
2nd Period 12:39-1:01
3rd Period 1:04-1:26
7th Period 1:29-1:51
8th Period 1:54-2:15

You can practice with your students by accessing the Ohio State Testing Portal. Students will be taking End of Course Tests based on courses they are currently enrolled in or tests they may need to retake. Tests that will be given include English Language Arts 2, Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology, American History, and American Government. A score of 700 is needed to receive the status of proficient. 700 is also the score used for the earning of seals.

Student fees are accessible on students' interim reports and grade cards that are accessible from your student's grade card portal. This information is typically found in the top left corner of the grade card.  (These are printed on the grade cards that are mailed home and viewable by selecting "View Paper Report Card.") The amount that is posted is the accumulated amount from the last time fees have been paid.

As we start to warm up, please read through the student handbook with district expectations, this includes the dress code. Students were given reminders as we ended the third quarter and went into Spring Break.

Drivers must adhere to posted school zone speed limits and exercise heightened awareness, particularly in the vicinity of crosswalks. Students are reminded to activate the crosswalk button, which functions similarly to a cell phone and responds to touch by a bare hand, and to exercise caution by checking for oncoming traffic before entering the crosswalk.

We are looking forward to a great week!

Go Red Raiders!

Chromebook readiness

Chromebook Readiness Checklist

  1. Each student has a chromebook

  2. Keyboard and screen working correctly

  3. Verify each student has Secure Test Browser listed under Apps

  4. Chromebook updates are pushed automatically to all student devices, however, sometimes depending on how much a student is using the device an update may have not automatically started. If an update is needed, a notification in the bottom left of the student device will appear. Click update if that notification is popping up or send that student to the technology help desk before testing.

  5. Very few students will need headphones for this assessment, so it is not needed for students to have headphones during this test.

Any concerns with a student chromebook should be handled by sending the student to the technology help time Friday or Tuesday.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS: LCS PARTNERS WITH STAY IN THE GAME NETWORK TO HELP ADDRESS CHRONIC STUDENT ABSENCES

Even as students mature and gain increasing independence, families continue to play a pivotal role in ensuring their access to educational opportunities and comprehending the paramount importance of regular attendance for success in both academic pursuits and future professional endeavors. Families can also actively advocate for additional resources to facilitate learning, particularly when in-person attendance presents challenges for students.

London City Schools to Cancel Classes on Monday, April 8th

After ongoing consultation with the Madison County Emergency Management Agency, the London City School District is canceling classes for all schools on Monday, April 8th, 2024 due to the Solar Eclipse. Despite the district being at the southern edge of totality, the area is expected to be heavily impacted by solar tourism on this day.

The district is planning to provide students and families with resources to make this day meaningful. Lessons on the eclipse, frequently asked questions and general information can also be found on the Ohio Department of Education’s 2024 Solar Eclipse webpage.

Nurse

A quick update from Nurse:

Establishing a regular bedtime routine and ensuring children have adequate rest is essential for their physical and mental health. Encouraging calming activities before bedtime, like reading or listening to quiet music, can help children unwind and prepare for sleep. A well-rested child is more likely to exhibit positive behaviors, such as attentiveness, cooperation, and academic success, while a tired child may struggle with concentration, exhibit irritability, and experience difficulties in controlling their emotions and behaviors. Prioritizing sufficient sleep for children not only enhances their academic performance but also contributes to their overall health and well-being, reducing the likelihood of illness and promoting a positive outlook toward daily activities and play.

Transportation

Update from Transportation

School Bus Safety Guidelines:

Motorists around school buses need to know the signals and the laws that concern school buses to help keep children safe:

-Do not pass a school bus that has red alternating flashing lights on. This is the signal that the bus is stopped to load or unload children. Traffic should not move until the bus resumes motion or the driver signals traffic to proceed.
- When a bus has alternating flashing amber (yellow) lights on, it is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Be ready to stop and watch for children in the roadway.

Parental Involvement in School Bus Safety:

Parents play a crucial role in helping keep children safe on the school bus. Here are some ways in which parents can help:

- Review the safety rules with children. Help them to understand why each rule is important.
- Dress children in light-colored clothing or jackets on dark mornings.
- Help children to be ready at the stop before their bus arrives.
- Take turns supervising bus stops for smaller children.

Stay Safe as the Weather Warms Up: Tips for Students

As the weather improves, it is important to prioritize safety. Here are some essential tips for students who are walking or biking to school:

Be Bright: Wear brightly colored clothing when you're out and about. This helps drivers see you more easily, especially during sunny days.

Reflective Gear: Consider wearing reflective materials on your clothing or backpack. Reflective vests or accessories can make a big difference in visibility.

Helmet Up: Always wear a helmet. Not only does it protect your head, but helmets with reflective tape also make you more visible to drivers, especially during twilight hours.

Light Your Ride: If you're cycling, make sure your bike has both a front headlight and a flashing red taillight. These lights not only help you see the road but also make you more noticeable to drivers. Adding reflective material to the sides of your bike can further enhance visibility.

Remember, safety always comes first. By following these tips, you can enjoy the sunshine while staying safe on the streets.

Carnival
Madison County Job and Family are on the search for volunteers for the Child Abuse Carnival on April 26th. They need 48 volunteers for our games. They divide the games into 2 shifts; shift 1 from 4:45pm-6:30pm and shift 2 from 6:15pm-8:00pm. If someone wants to work both shifts, they are thankful for that. They will offer to move them to a different game if they wish. They will also provide free food so the volunteers will be able to have a meal while at our carnival.
