Dear High School Student Families,

It's the final week of the school year. All this week is exams. Please check your student's grades regularly and have conversations with your students and their teachers. Failing grades at the end of the semester will result in not graduating or being enrolled in Summer School.

Students that participated in state testing in April had preliminary scores emailed to them for Algebra 1, Biology, American History and American Government. Preliminary English 2 results are expected to be released Monday.

Student fees are accessible on students' interim reports and grade cards that are accessible from your student's grade card portal. This information is typically found in the top left corner of the grade card.  (These are printed on the grade cards that are mailed home and viewable by selecting "View Paper Report Card.") The amount that is posted is the accumulated amount from the last time fees have been paid.

Drivers must adhere to posted school zone speed limits and exercise heightened awareness, particularly in the vicinity of crosswalks. Students are reminded to activate the crosswalk button, which functions similarly to a cell phone and responds to touch by a bare hand, and to exercise caution by checking for oncoming traffic before entering the crosswalk.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS: LCS PARTNERS WITH STAY IN THE GAME NETWORK TO HELP ADDRESS CHRONIC STUDENT ABSENCES

Attendance is a collective effort at London City Schools. By working together, let's raise awareness and mobilize statewide support for the crucial role of attendance in students' success in academics, careers, and life.

A quick update from Nurse:

Establishing a regular bedtime routine and ensuring children have adequate rest is essential for their physical and mental health. Encouraging calming activities before bedtime, like reading or listening to quiet music, can help children unwind and prepare for sleep. A well-rested child is more likely to exhibit positive behaviors, such as attentiveness, cooperation, and academic success, while a tired child may struggle with concentration, exhibit irritability, and experience difficulties in controlling their emotions and behaviors. Prioritizing sufficient sleep for children not only enhances their academic performance but also contributes to their overall health and well-being, reducing the likelihood of illness and promoting a positive outlook toward daily activities and play.

Update from Transportation

School Bus Safety Guidelines:

Motorists around school buses need to know the signals and the laws that concern school buses to help keep children safe:

-Do not pass a school bus that has red alternating flashing lights on. This is the signal that the bus is stopped to load or unload children. Traffic should not move until the bus resumes motion or the driver signals traffic to proceed.
- When a bus has alternating flashing amber (yellow) lights on, it is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Be ready to stop and watch for children in the roadway.

Parental Involvement in School Bus Safety:

Parents play a crucial role in helping keep children safe on the school bus. Here are some ways in which parents can help:

- Review the safety rules with children. Help them to understand why each rule is important.
- Dress children in light-colored clothing or jackets on dark mornings.
- Help children to be ready at the stop before their bus arrives.
- Take turns supervising bus stops for smaller children.

May is Bicycle Safety Month

For Drivers

- Prioritize Safety: It's imperative to slow down when approaching cyclists. High-speed collisions with cyclists can lead to fatal outcomes. You can prevent such tragedies by:
  - Lowering your speed when you see a cyclist.
  - Staying focused and avoiding any distractions while driving.

- Maintain Distance: When passing a bicyclist, always ensure you provide at least three feet of clearance. It’s also essential to know and understand the specific bicycle-related traffic laws in your area.

For Bicyclists

- Ride Together: Studies have shown that drivers tend to be more cautious when they see groups of cyclists rather than individuals. Try to cycle with others to improve your visibility and safety.

- Helmet Safety:
  - Wearing a helmet is crucial when bicycling as it significantly reduces the risk of head injuries. Consider a helmet as important as a seatbelt in a vehicle.
  - For the best protection, make sure your helmet fits correctly. 

- Improve Your Visibility: Make sure drivers can see you. Equip your bike with lights and reflectors, and wear clothing that is bright and/or retroreflective, especially during dawn, dusk, and night.
